You want some advice on how to make Money with HubPages and Google AdSense, then look no further. The best place on the Internet to make money with Google AdSense is right here on HubPages where anyone with a decent mastery of the English language and something worthwhile to say can write their heart out and get paid for it. If you are not signed up to Google AdSense yet, do so now. But before you even write your first Hub you need to know how to choose a title and keywords that will catch the most attention.

Had I Just Known

I would have made money online much sooner had I known what I know now. What with having to be author, proof reader, editor, publisher, promoter, PR, distributor, critic, sales person and a compassionate member of the fast growing Hubbing community all at once, no wonder so many of us have become almost enslaved to HubPages. The beauty of it all is that everything I have learnt about making money online, I have learnt from more experienced friendly, helpful writers who are always here, patient and willing to share their superior knowledge. Now it is my turn to share my unique experience so all of you new Hublings won’t take as long as I did cashing in your first Google cheque.

Title, URL and Keywords

OK, so you have an idea for a new Hub. Don’t even think about writing it yet. Before even beginning to draft your new hub, you need to find a title that will have a chance of ranking high in Google.

Finding a Long Tail Title

Find a good title and an equivalent URL (without the capital letters) that contains the same main keywords or keyword phrase for what you want to write about. You cannot change the URL of a Hub. You can change the title, but then the keywords won’t work as effectively as when they are the same as the words in the URL. For example, when I wrote my Hub “Hanging Upside Down” I didn’t yet know about Long-Tail Titles, so the URL is: http://hubpages.com/hub/hanging-upside-down
Much later, when I had learned about the benefits of Long-Tail Titles I changed the Title to:
Hanging Upside Down - Hang To Stretch And Tone Up With Gravity Inversion.

I could not change the URL but by turning the title into a Long-Tail Title, I increased the chance of this Hub being searched for by additional key phrases to just: “Hanging Upside Down”, phrases like:

  • “Stretch”
  • “Hang to Stretch”
  • “Stretch And Tone”
  • “Tone”
  • “Tone Up”
  • “Gravity Inversion”

So when you are looking for a good title, try to imagine what people would type into Google Search to find your Hub. Then go check the competition and do further keyword search with Market Samurai.

Keyword Academy

You can also do a Google search on how your potential title would rank by using the Free SEO Ad-on tool which is all explained in the excellent free video course here at the Keyword Academy.  You can sign up for the trial version for $1 for one month.  For me that was enough to get me going.  I then cancelled the full payment before the month was up so it only cost me $1 for a LOT of essential knowledge on how to get good ranking titles and keywords.
1.    Keyword Academy teaches you how to amend the title and URL  according to your final choice of keywords and keyword phrases  and check page ranking again until you’re sure your title has a good chance of ranking on first page and contains valuable, yet not too saturated keywords. When happy with this. . .
2.     Use that keyword phrase as your URL as well as your Title. Also include the  keyword phrases  in the Description, the Conclusion and insert related keywords naturally scattered throughout the Hub without keyword stuffing.

Drafting the Hub in Word

For me, publishing a new Hub should take place in one single online session as I don’t believe it does my Hubscore much good to store unpublished hubs in my account. That is why I think it’s a good idea to draft most of the contents for a new Hub at my leisure offline in Word. Then the headed paragraphs are all ready to turn into text capsules, correctly spelt and nicely set out . But I am not publishing yet. First I have to collect and edit the visuals.

Images, Photos and Videos

Collect all the images / photos, edit them for size and lay-out format if necessary with Photoshop and save them with a name that also contains some variation of the main keyword phrase. I ‘m not sure how it works, perhaps the images go back into the Google Images pot, but when they are clicked, relevant names serve as backlinks to your Hub. Always have at least five photos to qualify for the slide-show feature on each Hub, which again, increases your page views and Hub Score.

Slide Show Feature

Videos

Find the URL links to videos needed from YouTube and type them into the draft text where they belong in the Hub, so you’ll know where to insert which video capsule when it comes to publishing. (Always give credit where credit due.)

Notepad

When all the text, pictures, links, and references to videos are ready off line in the Word document, copy and paste the entire page into notepad to get rid of any unwanted hidden codes that the Word program contains. Now it’s just a question of copying and pasting every paragraph from notepad into a Hub text capsule, alternating these with an image (photo capsule) or a video and other capsules (Amazon, Ebay, poll, quizz, map, table) where required. Remember that all the links have to be inserted.

Presentation And Lay-Out

It has recently (may2012) been suggested that a full size photo at the top is the best lay-out. Further down I usually use half-size photos and then I try to match the size of each picture to the size of the adjacent text capsule or vice versa. I often even go through the trouble of taking a photo back to Photoshop to add a white top border to a picture so that it is aligned precisely with the first and last line of text in the text capsule next to it. You may think that is being aesthetically fussy but if you look at the example below, taken from my Hub Living in Rural Wales In A Derelict Cottage, you must admit, it looks pretty neat:-

Finishing Touches

Add an Rss feed related to the same group as the current Hub. It took me weeks to figure out how to even do that, so for those of you who are as naive (not to say thick) as I was, here is what you put into the RSS feed:

http://hubpages.com/author/yoursusername/latest/?rss

or

http://hubpages.com/author/yourusername/hot/?rss

You can even chose Hubs from a particular group as your rss link, for example: http://hubpages.com/author/yourusername/politics/hot/?rss

Don’t forget to put your user name instead of where it says “yourusername” above.

Amazon and Ebay

Add one or two relevant Amazon and Ebay capsules at the side where the text leaves room . Remember we have to write a 50 word minimum description for every Amazon item as per the new rules.

Ready To Publish

That’s it, press the Publish button. If your Hubs contains well written, interesting, original content, and you followed the guidelines here in How To Make Money With HubPages And Google AdSense, you will succeed on HubPages all in good time. However, to get greater results faster I recommend you also learn How To Promote And Share Your Hubs To Get More Backlinks.

Backlinks

SEO (Search Engine Optimisation)

Right, now you have published your new Hub. But the poor little baby needs further tlc. If you want your new Hub to survive, to grow big and strong, to get good traffic and prosper in AdSense, you have to spread the word about it. I had written 15 Hubs before I realised I wasn’t getting the traffic I needed to make money online. So for a whole week, I stopped writing new Hubs and devoted my time exclusively on learning how to promote and tweak my existing keywords and content for higher rankings and more traffic. I figured it takes less time to tweak fifteen Hubs for improved ranking and traffic than it would take to amend 50 or more Hubs right? So don’t start writing a new Hub yet until you have read How to Create A Web Presence.

My Earnings on HubPages

One Step at a Time

OK, so I am not exactly making a fortune yet, but I’m living proof, even with only 37 noncommercial Hubs, that you can enjoy regular money from AdSense on HubPages. With more time and more Hubs, I am confident that the figures will increase at the exponential rate they have done so far.

What Do YOU Think?

Consider that long tail tittles, keywords, appearance, content, promotion, backlinks, and great patience and devotion are needed to make money with Google and Adsense, Ebay and Amazon. With all the opportunities offered here at HubPages it shouldn't be too difficult to make it. I hope that this Hub has helped you a little further along your way towards success.

Thank you Cheeky Girl. Nice comment coming from someone as experienced as you seem to be. However, with all the changes now here on HubPages, having been forced to remove affiliate links, this Hub is not going to help my kitty very much. Still, as long as other Hubbers can enjoy the benefits of my knowledge, I am happy in terms of job satisfaction if nothing else.

Sue, thanks for taking the effort to come out with such us good hubs. On my previous hubs, i did all the writing on words document and published only after i have competed writing. And i did differently for my latest hub by doing it online and saved as unpublished hub before submission. I notice the latter one allow the hub score to increase (i don't quite understand why?), with quite a good initial score when it's submitted. Could you advise the pro and con for the two methods base on your experience?

Sue Adams profile image

Sue Adams Hub Author 11 months ago

Hi Majjhima,

I never have written hubs directly online and saved them as unpublished so I couldn't tell you which is the best method. From my experience the hubscore does increase from an initial 58 or so rapidly to above 75 in a day or two and often keeps going up in time, sometimes to over 90. But don't worry too much about hubscores as long as they are over 75 you must be doing pretty well.

Excellent and informative hub, I am not really a newbie, have joined a year ago but honestly could not spend much time on it. I have just published my 24th hub and got a Google Adsense number recently, don't really know how to implement it in a fruitful manner (money generating), so this hub really inspired me! Bookmarked and voted up!

Do you use public domain photos and videos or your own?

You also made a comment about keeping unpublished hubs in your account. How does that matter? Thanks!

Hello Kathleen,

I use my own pictures and videos or Wikimedia Commons for copyright free illustrations.

I don't know why I don't like keeping unpublished hubs in my account. I prefer to keep drafts in my computer until they are ready for publication.
