Dangers And Risks Of Eating Meat - New Evidence

Be Informed

The dangers and risks of eating meat are still widely ignored despite the evidence. Many of us really don’t want to know about the real dangers of meat consumption, but if you don’t want to get sick and obese you better be informed. The reason I am a vegetarian is not so much because “I feel sorry for the poor animals” although I agree that most animals reared for human consumption would be better off not having been born. A more selfish reason for not eating meat is that I have done the research and become aware of the real dangers of meat consumption. Eating meat is the biggest health hazard today. If you are squeamish, don’t read the rest of this hub. But if you do manage to get to the end of it, you too will probably decide to give up meat for your own safety.

The Right To Know

Meat-eaters have a right to know what the cows, pigs, lamb and hens and turkeys they consume are fed on. Among other ingredients those herbivorous animals are given reject meat mixed with fecal matter (pooh) to eat. The shocking information that follows comes from fourth-generation dairy farmer and cattle rancher Howard Lyman, the Cattle Rancher Who Won’t Eat Meat. He grew up on an industrial farm and ran a feedlot operation there for over two decades..

Rendering Plants

When an animal is killed for food, about half of its weight is not sold to the human food industry. The intestines (and their contents!), the head, hooves, and horns, the bones and blood are deposited into huge grinders at “rendering” plants. Also entire carcasses that are diseased are added to the rendering mix. Rendering is a multi billion-a-year industry, dealing with fifty billion pounds of animal parts and sick animals a year. No animal is too ill, too cancerous, or too decomposed to be included in the raw product of a rendering plant.

House Pets

Six or seven million house pets that are euthanized in animal shelters every year also end up at the renders. A large city like Los Angeles sends about three hundred tons of euthanized dogs and cats to the rendering plant on a monthly basis. Animals caught and culled by control agencies, and road kill, are also taken to the rendering plants. Because road kill is not picked up on a daily basis, in the summer, road kill collectors can usually smell their catch to find it.

Protein Concentrates

At the rendering plant these horrid ingredients are then ground and steam-cooked, the lighter, fatty materials float up to the top, get refined and used in products such as lubricants, cosmetics, soaps, candles, and waxes (!) The rest, heavier protein stuff is dried and made into a brown powder that includes fecal material. This brown powder is added to almost all pet food as well as to livestock feed. It is called "protein concentrates".

Federal Department of Agriculture

With growing concern about the spread of Mad Cow disease, the FDA put in place a law that bans the feeding of protein from cud-chewing animals to ruminants (cattle to cattle). Therefore, to the degree that the law is enforced, cows are no longer the cannibals that the meat industry had turned them into. They are no longer fed on other cows, sheep, or goats. However, they are still fed ground-up cats, dogs, pigs, horses, turkeys and chickens, as well as fecal matter and blood from chickens and their own species. Beef cattle are consistently given food supplemented with rendered animal parts. The use of animal excrement in feed is common. Livestock owners find it an effective way of getting rid of a fraction of the 1.6 million tons of livestock wastes produced annually by the meat industry.

Facts:

Some diseases, like rabies are transmitted from the host animal to those who eat that animal.

Food poisoning from the E. Coli bacteria, which results from fecal contamination of food, is the cause of death of nine thousand Americans per year.

About 85 percent of all food poisoning comes from bad meat.

Mad Cow disease sometimes “jumps” species and can develop into a new brand of the always fatal, brain-wasting Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease in humans.

Parkinsons is on the increase.

Questions:

Why is one animal chosen as a pet above another? One beloved pet is spoiled with the other animal in tins: salmon, tuna, duck, chicken, lamb, and ox. Human interaction with animals is full of incomprehensible contradictions. Supermarket shelves bulge with the most extravagant products for our beloved pets. In the next aisle other ruthlessly reared and bloodily cut up animals are displayed for human consumption.

To what extend does the consumption of diseased or unhealthy animals cause diseases in humans?

What is the connection between obese livestock and obesity in human adults and children?

You want to lose weight?

You want to lose weight? Then face facts: Making a difference begins at home. We can stop the obesity pandemic for the sake of our children and save the world at the same time. Watch and implement this video that says it all.

Decisions

People get sick and have to make decisions about their health: should I have by-pass surgery or angioplasty, chemotherapy or radiation?

Would it not make more sense to consciously make informed choices that will never expose us to the above sad options in the first place? A choice is made, every time we decide what to put into our mouth.

Eating Meat is Ecologically Incorrect

Meat production involves the exploitation of nature. The reason for forest mortality and the souring of the soil is evaporation of ammonia from manure, followed by conversion to nitric acid. This produces acid rain. Breeding cattle is a part cause of the hole in the ozone layer and global warming. With the publication of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change it became known that livestock fumes and waste produces 18% of the CO2 contributing to the greenhouse effect. This means that eating meat has a larger share in climate change than all means of transportation worldwide. All Gore never mentioned it.

1. Foods That Kill

2. Plugged up Arteries

3. Breast and Prostate Cancer

Meat Production is Bad Economics

Cattle take up far more land than crops to produce the same amount of food. Amazon forests are clear felled to produce temporary grazing for Brazilian beef cattle. Meat is a waste of land and a waste of the food that livestock converts into a small amount of meat.

Foods That Kill

Dr. Michael Klaper’s most entertaining and incredibly informative talk, featured here in the 5 videos, says a lot more on the dangers of meat consumption than I could ever put into a single hub. If you don’t have the time to watch the talk now, then bookmark this page for later but please watch it before putting another bite of meat into your mouth. I promise you won’t regret it. If not for your own sake, be informed about the dangers of meat consumption and take the time to watch the videos for the sake of your children’s future health.

4. What do you Feed your Kids?

5. What Can I Eat Then?

To Conclude

The evidence of the dangers of eating meat is now clear. Even if I was to believe only half of the information I have gathered here, in reality I can clearly see that people and children are getting obese and sick all around me at an alarmingly increasing rate. Statistics promise that 2 /3rd of us will get cancer.

No thank you. I believe that being aware of the dangers of meat consumption, and being a vegetarian, gives me a better chance of a healthy life. Sod the animals, I come first. Yet if more of us were informed perhaps the evil and so damaging meat industry would slowly fade away like the nuclear threat during the cold war, apartheid, the Berlin Wall, or cigarette smoking? Let us remain optimistic and start at number one, yours truly.

Powerful stuff. I am a meat eater and probably always will be but I was shocked by how high cancer researchers put red meat and processed meat up the list of risk factors. I have modified my diet to the extent where these foods are occasional components - a big change for me.

Right on Sue: I watched 'Food Nation', a documentary about the food industry. I haven't touched meat since then, and have a hard time eating eggs. Beans, tofu, tempeh, seitan, that's the safe way to get your protein these days.

Sue Adams profile image

Hello LRobbins, Soon you'll find that eating meat feels like chewing cardboard and your taste buds and saliva glands will simply reject it.

I agree Madeleine, pulses, tofu, nuts, mushrooms give plenty of protein. And, as Dr. Kapler says in the third video, too much protein has adverse effects.

Those days of happy healthy animals are long gone I'm afraid Mischelle, but luckily we can survive quite well without eating meat so the sooner the meat industry is boycotted the better for all species.

your hub is very informative and very true. The meat industry is a huge business that does not interest our environment or our health and even less the great resources that we could obtain growing vegetables instead of pasture. Our strength is trying to raise the awareness of this issue: probably it is suffice ate half of the meat (and fish!) we are used to give to give an effective help to our planet.

Hi. I've been a vegetarian for 30 years. First of human's anatomy is designed to herbivorous. I heard Dr. Micheal Savage, author of many nutritional books, BTW,say that carnivores have a short gut,but we, on the other hand, have a medium length gut. Excuse me? When is 14-17 feet long intestine medium length? The sh** that you eat stays in your body for days, if you're hom sapiens. So, if they've used a little formaldehyde to make the meat stay "fresh". guess what? You have formaldehyde inside you for a couple of days. And so forth.

However, as a vegetarian, I did become a "Hare Krsna" about 29 years ago, and I must say, that I teach my grand kids to love the cow, because she gives us so many nice things.

nice hub

However, being vegetarian does not guarantee weight loss!!!!

Yes, there are fat vegetarians but only a fraction compared to fat meat eaters. It shouldn't take more than 1 day for your system to process food but still, you are right vrajavala all the steroids, colouring agents and formaldehyde we can very well do without.

Hi Sue:

This is a very well presented "hub."

I don't agree with much of it.

Man is an "omnivore."

His physiology has evolved to ingest just about any type of food it can find.

One of the major reasons he evolved a large brain is because he branched off from "ape" like hominids millions of yrs ago and began adding animal and insect protein to his diet.

The great apes evolved , in the main (chimps do eat meat) as herbivores.

We humans are genetically programmed to hunt, kill, ingest and digest other animals along with insects, fruits, nuts and veggies. That fact is why we have evolved into the "big brained" conscious creatures we are today.

I have no problem with using all leftover parts of animals we feed upon, to feed other animals.

Processing animal parts destroys harmful bacteria and disease organisms. Once that has been done, why not feed other life with what is produced?

I think that is a proficient/efficient use of by products. It certainly isn't wasted.

I seldom eat "red" meat. Why? Because it is very hard to digest and sits in the gut much too long and, to my way of thinking, rots. It can be problematic in the lower gut.

The human diet should include food of every sort in moderation.

The human animal is a brutish, wily, meat eating predator that has adapted itself over millions of years to eat just about anything and gain some nutrative value from it. That is and was a very salient factor of it's successful evolution to this point in its existence.

We are "killers." That "fact" will not change for many millenia.

We will never waste what we kill.

We are ingenious creatures that will find "value" and use for anything we kill...and we WILL kill!

Hello Quark,

You obviously have not watched the videos on this hub or you would not repeat such out of date clichés.

"Man" (and "woman"?) has a choice: To remain barbarians or evolve into more civilised and "humane" beings. I am glad that the majority of us chose the latter.

qwark profile image

qwark 17 months ago

G'mornin' Sue:

You are quite correct. I didn't watch the movies.

There is no possibility that "man" will become a more "civilised and "humane" creature in our lifetime.

"Complex" man is a slave to millions of years of genetic programming.

I've studied, anthropologically, the rise of man.

The "out-of-date cliches" you mention are, barbaric man, at his worst/best.

I didn't watch the movies because all that can be covered in referrence to contemporary man sublimating his inherent desire to "kill" is the acme of "idealism."

Man is a "meat" eating beast. He IS Earth's prime predator.

I'm not sure I understand this comment:

"I am glad that the majority of us chose the latter."

Do you mean the the majority of "humanity" chooses to be "civilized?" Or did you mean that the majority of "humanity" chooses not to be "omnivores?"

You put alot of effort in developing this "hub" and you did a good job.

It is very well presented and I respect your opinions, but man's basic nature cannot be changed in our lifetime.

Thanks for the response Sue.

I hope you have a wonderful New Year.

I mean the latter choice, i.e. the majority chose to evolve into compassionate, humane beings. Where does our "superiority" over the animal kingdom lie if not in humaneness?

Human nature is changing NOW in front of your very eyes. You just need to open them and see. Watch the Videos, inform yourself instead of being stuck in macho old dogmas.

Merry Xmas, enjoy your turkey and have a happy new year.

Hi Sue:

I watched the films to see if there was anything in them that I wasn't already aware of and if there was info offered that wasn't available to all of us who have studied foods and human wellness, 20 yrs ago. There wasn't.

We are omnivores.

Our digestive systems have been programmed to handle it all. We are "generalists" in our choice of diet.

A healthful diet should consist of foods from animal and plants in MODERATION!

Man has a freedom of choice and since he is not just a "grazer" or a "carnivore," his options in choice of food is immense...and his education is minimal.

The majority of human life on this planet will eat anything that is not poisonous.

The majority of human life is eking a living from the earth or from the garbage cans of gluttonous others who over eat and dump the leftovers.

Animals that are killed by man, for whatevr reason, should be used to feed the starving masses! A kind of "Soylent Green" if you will.

As he exists, man is a genetically programmed killing machine of the highest order.

I agree with you that we, in the alledged "civilized" world, are a "gluttonous" species of animal life.

You can't keep a genetically programmed predator (the human animal) from killing and eating it's prey.

The average age of human life has increased significantly over the past 50 - 75 yrs.

Way back in the early 20th century, we ate more grains, fruits and veggies, and lived shorter lives.

Today we eat lotsa "crap" and 1 out of every 4 people in the USA will live to be 100!

Moderation!! In our diet and plenty of exercise will keep us healthy.

I appreciate your friendly response. :):

About your statement Quark:

"As he exists, man is a genetically programmed killing machine of the highest order."

"highest order?" sounds like Hitler - "genetically programmed?" implies that we have no influence over our evolution which is a very negative and sad statement. Speak for yourself Quark.

You believe that:

"... man is a genetically programmed killing machine of the highest order."

I believe that:

we can be, and many of us try to be, in charge of our own evolution. Trying to improve and control our evil ways is what makes many of us human. As Socrates said: "First comes the thought, then the reality."

With respect, Quark, I do not wish to pursue this conversation. We shall just have to agree to disagree. :)

Sue,

13 months ago my doctor said that my liver was overloaded when it came to processing all the fat that I was taking in. It was a little scary for a 61 yr. old male who ate meat and cheese every day for over 40 yrs.

The past 13 months I have eaten red meat 5 times. During that time I lowered my cholsterol 80 points, body fat dropped from +30 to 12.8. 262 lbs when I started, 190 now.

In fairness I cut my portions, ate 6 small meals a day, worked out 3 days a week for 2 hrs each time.

People, try leaving meat out of your diet for 3 months and experience the change in your body.

Oh, my first time to post on a message board. I just had to put my 2 cents in for something that I truly beleive was setting me up for a major illness had I stayed on the red meat eating path of life. Time will tell, but damn I feel great.

So I just made this account to post a comment on this...

I feel the idea of man being predators/beasts(LOL) is totally ridiculous and false. We cannot catch or kill an animal with our bare hands or natural speed. Our digestive systems and physical build compliment that(and considering we haven't changed all that much in build, Id say our ancestors before us and tools looked the same, and couldn't catch an animal for their life). From what we know we had to evolve with bigger brains(not claws, canines, etc) in order to make tools AND fire which allowed us to eat meat. The only case Ive read of non meat eating animals reverting to meat eating is vitamin deficiency or to make a dominant statement among a group(apes). With that said, even if everything I said is wrong(could be!), humans still treat animals horribly, disgustingly. My primary motive for going vegan was to stop supporting the torture and death of so many animals. So, even if we need meat to survive(which we clearly do not), how "evolved and compassionate" are we to continue this terrible act of industrial farming? Its easy to support something when you adhere to it blindly, huh? All the proof of meat, milk and eggs being bad for you is right in our faces. Did you know plants have no cholesterol? Why do humans get clogged arteries/high cholesterol but tigers or lions don't? Ohhhh, riiiiiiight. Cooked or not, our bodies cannot process the food most of the world eat. Does the high obesity, cancer, heart disease, diabetes rate make ANYONE ponder this idea?

VegetariansAreTasty 3 months ago

Why must you be so incredibly arrogant, Sue? Eating meat is why Homo sapiens developed (we weren't 'designed,' we evolved). Qwark made some very good points and indeed was a lot more polite than you, yet you brushed him off rudely and made comments about his mental capacity.

What kind of immature fairy tale do you long for that you think killing is barbaric? Eating meat isn't unnatural, it's the kind of meat we eat that harms us (processed, etc.). Keeping livestock isn't cruel, it's how we raise them and in what conditions. And killing is not barbaric, it's how the animal is killed that matters.

I'm all for the humane treatment of animals, and eating natural, organic, ethical food, but the kind of extremism you're advocating is not realistic, and it's far from the only option. Why not be honest about ALL the options, if you really care, instead of promoting vegetarianism as the only way?

By the way, dogs are omnivores, not carnivores, or they wouldn't survive on a vegetarian diet.

This is beginning to look like a religious forum, which is fruitless. Those of you who have read the hub, watched the videos and read the comments can make a choice between using the information positively or sticking with the status quo. One thing, however, is certain: vegetarians are living proof that meat today is unnecessary in a human diet.

Michael Niemi 8 weeks ago

Hi Sue,

Good hub, I have read and seen many of these things before and I've just recently become vegan with my girlfriend (2 months ago now). One comment or concern that has come up in my research is that soybeans which are not fermented (tofu, soymilk, TVP, soy cheese...etc) can actually be harmful to your health. Do you have any information or comment on that?

Sue Adams profile image

Sue Adams Hub Author 8 weeks ago

Hello Michael,

Yes, I think you are right about commercially produced soya products. The reason is that mass produced soya is genetically modified to withstand pesticides. What this means is that when a plane sprays a field with pesticides everything on that field dies, except the product they want to grow. So when we eat the product, we consume the pesticides and also slowly die of cancer or some other disease induced by commercial agriculture practices.

Michael Niemi 8 weeks ago

Hi Sue,

Thanks for the info. My gf and I only buy non-gmo organic soy products, so if I understand correctly then, the issue of fermented and non-fermented isn't a big concern, its really the genetically modified soya that we should avoid?

Sue Adams profile image

Sue Adams Hub Author 8 weeks ago

Yes Michael you are correct. As I understand, gmo gives a crop resistance against killer substances that kill all life (insects and pests, including human life when the crop is consumed) except the gmodified crop itself.

Hi smartincome,

If you live on a remote island in the Philippines where animals are reared on small-holdings and live outdoors, where farmers slaughter their own animals and don't use anti-biotics, hormones etc., then eating meat once or twice a week may be OK. But even then, you cannot be healthy without eating vegetables. Just make a gradual change towards a more vegetarian diet and you'll see the improvement in your teeth, your skin, your hair, nails, bones, your mood and stamina.

Change is life, go for it!

Hi again smartincome,

If you remember that every time you eat meat you are eating a substance which is damaging to both your own health and to the health of the whole planet, then changing your diet isn't so difficult. On the contrary, it is an interesting challenge to discover all the other delicious and nutritious options available.

Hey Sue,

I agree that eating meat is very dangerous.

The only thing I have to add is that in my opinion in addition to the dangers you have mention meat is also very dangerous because of all of the added salt.

In fact, the only meat I have anymore is either fish, seafood, chicken, or turkey. You are right that even these foods are not very safe. I have to admit that I have a little bit of a weakness for fish, seafood, chicken, and turkey. I try to keep my consumption of fish, seafood, chicken, and turkey to a minimum.

But I am trying my very best to eat mostly plant based food...

I try my best to eat mostly salad, veggie burgers, vegetables, almond butter, and peanut butter. While these foods are not perfect, they are better than eating pork, or beef.

To be honest, I really do not miss pork or beef.

You see I had to lose a significant amount of weight during the past nine months because I almost died of a severe high blood pressure episode on July 1, 2011. I ended up being diagnosed with cardiomyopathy, and congestive heart failure. I had been prescribed four different types of blood pressure medicine as well as Zocor to reduce my cholesterol level.

In addition, about three months ago, I had an implantable cardioverter defibrillator implanted into my left chest that has a wire that goes from the control box through one of my veins into the right ventricle of my heart.

All of the health problems that I had are because I had gone through a lifetime of eating junk food such as cheeseburgers, pork, as well as fried foods made with trans fats...

I wish I had read your article years ago...

Finally, the point of my comment is simply if I can learn to eat better than it might be possible for everyone to learn from my messed up life and eat better...

I hope that I will be able to live many more years because I am now on a healthier path so to speak.
